Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and blanch the white cabbage leaves for 2 minutes until pliable, then drain and set aside to cool.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, diced onion, minced garlic, cooked white rice, half an egg beaten, salt, black pepper, and sweet paprika. Mix well until evenly combined.
  3. Lay one cabbage leaf flat and place a portion of the beef mixture in the center. Fold the sides over and roll tightly to form a stuffed cabbage roll. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
  4. In a large skillet, melt unsalted butter over medium heat. Place the cabbage rolls seam side down and brown them gently on all sides for about 5 minutes.
  5. Add tomato paste and vegetable broth to the skillet, stirring gently to coat the rolls. Cover the skillet and simmer on low heat for 30 minutes until the meat is cooked through and cabbage is tender.
  6. Remove the lid and cook for an additional 5 minutes to reduce the sauce slightly. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
  7. Serve the stuffed cabbage rolls hot, spooning some of the cooking sauce over each serving.

Tips

  • Use fresh cabbage leaves and blanch them just enough to make them pliable but not mushy.
  • Cook the rice beforehand and let it cool before mixing with the meat to avoid overcooking.
  • Simmer gently to keep the rolls intact and allow flavors to meld.
