1
- 120 g all-purpose flour
- 60 ml warm water
- 2 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 30 ml plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter melted
- 0.5 teaspoon salt
Origins Indian
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, add all-purpose flour and salt. Mix well to combine.
- Add the yeast mixture, plain yogurt, and vegetable oil to the flour mixture.
- Mix the ingredients with a spoon until a rough dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal portions.
- Roll each portion into an oval or teardrop shape about 1/4 inch thick on a floured surface.
- Heat a non-stick skillet or cast iron pan over medium-high heat until hot.
- Place one rolled dough piece onto the skillet and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until bubbles form on the surface.
- Flip the naan and cook the other side for another 1 to 2 minutes until golden brown spots appear.
- Brush the cooked naan with melted unsalted butter immediately after removing from the skillet.
- Repeat the cooking process with the second dough portion.
- Serve the naan warm with your favorite Indian dishes or dips.
Tips
- Use warm water to activate the yeast properly but not too hot to kill it.
- Knead the dough well to develop gluten for a soft texture.
- Cook naan on medium-high heat to get nice bubbles and golden spots.
- Brush with butter immediately to keep naan soft and flavorful.
