Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve active dry yeast in warm whole milk. Let sit 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt.
- Add softened unsalted butter, large egg, vanilla extract, and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients.
- Mix all ingredients until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit).
- Punch down the risen dough and roll it into a long oval shape about 30 cm by 20 cm.
- Divide the dough into three equal strips.
- Add red food coloring to one strip, green food coloring to another, and leave the third strip plain.
- Twist the three strips together gently to form a braid and shape into a ring on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cover the ring and let it rise for 30 minutes.
- Bake the dough ring for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- While the cake bakes, prepare the glaze by mixing powdered sugar with water until smooth.
- Remove the cake from the oven and let cool completely on a wire rack.
- Brush the glaze over the cooled cake evenly.
- Sprinkle purple, yellow, and green sanding sugars over the glaze in alternating sections to create a festive look.
Tips
- Use warm milk to activate yeast properly.
- Do not over-knead the dough to keep it tender.
- Let the cake cool completely before glazing to prevent melting.
- Use a clean brush to apply glaze evenly.
