Instructions

  1. Peel the large yellow onion and slice it into 1 cm thick rings, then separate the rings carefully.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine 50 g all-purpose flour, 15 g cornstarch, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 pinch salt, and 1 pinch ground black pepper.
  3. In a separate small bowl, beat 1 large egg lightly, then add 60 ml cold sparkling water and mix gently.
  4. For the egg and water mixture into the dry ingredients and whisk until smooth to make a batter.
  5. Heat 500 ml vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot to 180 degrees Celsius (use a thermometer if available).
  6. Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated, then carefully place it into the hot oil.
  7. Fry the onion rings in batches for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally for even cooking.
  8. Use a slotted spoon to remove the onion rings and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  9. Serve the crispy onion rings hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Tips

  • Use cold sparkling water to make the batter lighter and crispier.
